soldiers ...more TIBETAN BANKNOTE: FIRST ISSUE After the expulsion of Chinese soldiers from Tibet, and return of the Thirteenth Dalai Lama to Lhasa in 1912, he ordered banknotes and postage stamps be issued, printed by the same process, in the same printing house under the Potala The first series consist of single color banknotes in 5 values, viz. 5 tam, 10 tan, 15 tam, 25 tam and 50 tam. They were believed to be circulated only in Lhasa, and their replacement was so complete that few remain in private hands, therefore complete sets are elusive All banknotes were dated in Tibetan calendar in cycles of 60 years. Printing of the banknotes were in batches as need arise, and could be years later. They were printed on local papers and imported ink. There were sometimes substantial ink color variations from batch to batch. 1912 Tibet 5 Tam, missing black seal variety. PMG Very Fine 25. Rather clear impression and outstanding condition for this type of early Tibetan banknote, not to mention the scarce variety. 18.55 x 10.2 cm.
