100 RM. ...more Aktiengesellschaft Breslauer Zoologischer Garten, Nominal 100 RM.
Wroclaw, July 1938, Share of 100 RM, #363, hole cancellation, estimate: € 60.
Inspired by the tremendous success of the Zoological Garden of Berlin, founded in 1843, the citizens of Breslau wanted an animal garden of their own. Under the leadership of the mayor of the city, Doctor Elwager, a committee of thirteen influential Breslau citizens was formed on 7 March 1863. A joint stock company with a capital of 30,000 Thalers was founded to be the holder of the animal garden. After the joint stock company Breslauer Zoologischer Garten had been constituted on 10 July 1865 the company bought a plot of 24,7 acres next to the Oder river, roughly two miles from the city. Until 1864 the enthusiastic people of Breslau subscribed shares for 48,250 Thalers capital and made many donations of animals. When the animal garden was opened, 189 animals could be seen. Most were domestic. The festive opening was celebrated on 10 July 1865 with a concert. From the beginning the park was very popular. The zoo paid a dividend in form of five free entrance tickets in 1871. In 1872, a dividend of 1,5 per cent was paid for the first time. By the turn of the century the zoological garden had a stock of 1,800 animals in 650 different species. The garden became famous for its successes in raising and keeping rare species. Because of the air attacks during World War II. many animals of different zoological gardens in Germany were evacuated to the animal garden of Breslau. But Breslau was bombed as weil during the last weeks of the war and many people and animals perished. After the capitulation of the German army the remaining animals had to be evacuated to different cities in Poland. The zoo of Breslau was reopened on 22 July 1948 as Miejski Ogrod Zoologiczny, Wroclaw. Since 1952, the grounds have been managed by the city with the subsidy of the state of Poland. Berlin, 13 June 1872, Founder‘s Share of 200 Thaler Pr. Crt., #1085, 24.7 x 33.5 cm, green, brown, black, folds, some creases, coupons, facsimile signature of Heinz Quistorp, superb vignette with horse drawn railway, a rarity, only two certificates were discovered (#1084 and #1085), estimate: € 5000.
A concession for a normal gauge railway, running from the Westend of Elberfeld through the then Königstraße and further via Elberfeld to Barmen and to Rittershausen, was given in 1872. In the same year, the concession was sold to the Deutsche Pferde-Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft, which was incorporated in Berlin. Building of the double tracked railway started on 8 April 1873. The company, which was founded by Heinrich Quistorp, retired councilor, Albert Bühling and engineer Johannes Büsing, furthermore owned a horse tramway in Gdansk-Oliva. As many companies of that time, the Berliner Pferde-Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft failed in the Panic of 1873. The horse railway in Wuppertal was finished by other investors and opened at full length in 1874. The line was enlarged from Westend to Sonnborn in 1889, and it was electrified in 1896. The railway was extended to Westend / Varresbeck via Wieden to Wülfrath and Mettman in the following time. The last part of the railway was closed on 30 May 1987
