Ulrich Felzmann 162nd Auction - Coins
July 3rd - 7th, 2018
When the words “going, going, gone” ring through the auction hall again on 3 and 4 July, numismatics enthusiasts can look forward to a sizzling summer range of coins, currency notes and medals from all eras.
As is customary, the first auction day of the 162nd International Hall Auction kicks off with coins from antiquity, such as a Roman aureus from the year 73 A.D., minted under Domitian’s reign and depicting the ruler holding a sceptre in his left hand (Lot 74).
The Germany Until 1799 section features not only a 3-taler Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttelschen Löser minted by moneyer Heinrich Oeckeler and depicting the armoured duke Friedrich Ulrich on his horse (Lot 184) but also a ducat with a crowned double-headed eagle commemorating the 44th Grand Master of the Teutonic Order, Johann Eustach von Westernach, which was last auctioned in this quality in Basel in 1999 (Lot 188).
Going under the hammer again is a Rheingold ducat depicting Grand Duke Carl Friedrich of Baden, of which only 972 specimens were minted. The front bears a bust of the Grand Duke, while the back shows a sitting river god with Baden oval shield, staff and urn. From Prussia comes a 10-mark gold coin from 1889 with a slight scratch and a current Franquinet expert appraisal (Lot 325).
A choice specimen from the GDR collection field is a rare sample “30 Years of Combat Groups”, slightly tarnished and extremely rare, as only 100 specimens were ever minted (Lot 448).
Among the surprises in the Europe collection field is not only a medieval Anglo-Saxon sceat with a hexagon, presumably from Friesland or Austrasia (Lot 594), but also a British silver medal, minted to commemorate the marriage of ruler James I with Anne of Denmark, which is well worth investigating (Lot 640).
On the medals and badges front is a medal from the West Russian Volunteer Army (Avalov Freikorps) on its original 40 mm wide ribbon featuring the colours of the Russian-German flags (Lot 1757).
